Kim Sun A memulai karirnya di industri hiburan pada tahun 1996 ketika menikmati waktu liburan, melalui nama seorang teman yang bekerja sebagai model.

Meski tidak memiliki pengalaman kerja, ia putus kuliah dan memulai karirnya dengan tampil untuk Hanbul Cosmetics, yang melejitkan karirnya.

Kemudian ia muncul di beberapa video musik. Setelahnya, ia muncul sebagai peran kecil dalam drama Bang-Ul-I pada tahun 1997.

Perannya yang sedikit lebih besar muncul melalui film berjudul Yesterday (2002) dan diikuti oleh film Wet Dreams (2005).

Pada awal 2005, ia membintangi serial drama hit My Lovely Sam Soon, yang ternyata menjadi terobosan besarnya. Ia berhasil mengantongi banyak penghargaan karena itu.

Belasan tahun kemudian, posisinya semakin dianggap melalui peran dalam drama Children of Nobody (2018) dan Secret Boutique (2019).

Pada tahun 2022, ia didapuk menjadi pemeran utama dalam drama yang berjudul The Empire of Law.
