Sejak kecil, ia sudah menunjukkan minatnya di bidang akting dengan belajar di sekolah teater bernama Stagecoach Theatre Arts. Bukan hanya akting, ia pun mendapatkan pelajaran menari dan bernyanyi.

Tahun 1999, seorang agen casting menemukan bakat dalam dirinya setelah mendapat informasi dari guru teaternya di Oxford. Setelah delapan kali audisi, akhirnya ia terpilih untuk memerankan tokoh Hermione Granger.

Ia secara konsisten membintangi film Harry Potter mulai dari seri pertama hingga seri ketujuh bagian dua. Bahkan dibandingkan dua pemeran utama lainnya, yaitu Daniel Radcliffe dan Rupert Grint, ia menerima paling banyak pujian.

Setelah membintangi Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix yang merupakan seri kelima film Harry Potter, ia akhirnya mendapat kesempatan untuk bermain film lain, yaitu Ballet Shoes pada 2007.

Meski keseluruhan seri Harry Potter telah usai, aktingnya yang memukau berhasil membuatnya mendapatkan tawaran untuk membintangi berbagai film lainnya.

Beberapa di antaranya, yaitu My Week with Marilyn (2011), The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), Beauty and the Beast (2017), dan Little Women (2020).

Dengan prestasinya selama berkarier di dunia entertainment, ia pun diganjar berbagai penghargaan, seperti Bintang Film Wanita Terbaik dalam Otto Awards 2003, Pemeran Terbaik dalam MTV Movie Awards 2012, Aktris Drama dalam Teen Choice Awards 2013, dan lainnya.

Ia tinggal di Paris, Perancis hingga berusia 5 tahun.
Orang tuanya bercerai saat usianya masih belia. Ia dan adikn laki-lakinya kemudian ikut dengan sang ibu ke Oxfordshire. Meski demikian, ia tetap menikmati kebersamaan dengan ayahnya tiap akhir pekan di London.
Ia bisa sedikit berbahasa Perancis.
Sudah bercita-cita menjadi aktris sejak usia 6 tahun.
Pada Maret 2009, ia berhasil menduduki peringkat 6 dalam kategori Bintang Muda Terkaya versi majalah Forbes.
Ia mengakui bahwa penghasilannya ketika membintangi seluruh seri film Harry Potter membuat pundi-pundi penghasilannya penuh sehingga sebenarnya ia bisa saja tak usah bekerja lagi.
Setelah Harry Potter seri kelima usai, ia sebenarnya sempat ragu-ragu untuk menandatangani kontrak hingga seri terakhir. Namun, ia kemudian merasa belum siap melepaskan peran Hermione Granger sehingga memilih untuk kembali menandatangi kontrak hingga 23 Maret 2007.
Perannya sebagai Belle dalam film Beauty and the Beast mendapat cukup banyak kritikan karena dinilai kurang cocok.
Tahun 2008, ia dikabarkan akan menggantikan Keira Knightley sebagai ikon Chanel. Namun, rupanya kabar tersebut tak benar.
Pada 2009 dan 2010, ia mengumumkan bahwa dirinya menjadi ikon Burberry. Kemudian di tahun 2011, ia terpilih sebagai ikon Lancome.
Ia mengaku pernah memiliki ketertarikan yang besar terhadap Tom Felton yang memerankan karakter Draco Malfoy. Namun, kini mereka bersahabat baik.
Ia pernah berpacaran dengan pemain rugbi bernama Matt Janey hingga musisi George Craig.
Di awal 2021, ia digosipkan pensiun dari dunia hiburan karena ingin fokus dengan kehidupannya bersama sang kekasih, Leo Robinton. Namun, manajernya menepis gosip tersebut.
Ia adalah seorang feminis yang terus berjuang untuk kesejahteraan kaum wanita. Bahkan ia pergi ke Bangladesh dan Zambia untuk mewujudkannya. Tak heran jika ia kemudian ditunjuk sebagai Duta Wanita PBB.
