Kim Dong Wook memulai kariernya dengan berakting dalam sebuah film pendek berjudul Monitor.

Ia terus berusaha mengembangkan kariernya dalam berakting dan mengikuti berbagai casting hingga akhirnya mulai mendapat perhatian masyarakat setelah bermain di film Flying Boys pada 2004.

Setelah beberapa tahun hanya bermain dalam film, akhirnya di tahun 2006 ia mendapatkan kesempatan untuk tampil dalam drama layar kaca berjudul Break dengan memerankan tokoh bernama Yeong Hun.

Sosoknya mampu merebut perhatian masyarakat di luar negaranya setelah turut bermain dalam drama hits yang tenar di berbagai negara, yaitu Coffee Prince.

Tahun 2017, popularitasnya melejit setelah tampil di film Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds yang dilanjutkan dengan seri keduanya di tahun 2018.

Pada 2020, ia kembali mencuri perhatian setelah menjadi pemeran utama di drama Find Me in Your Memory, berpasangan dengan aktris cantik Moon Ga Young.
